For the second of our outdoor, live summer concert series, we’re thrilled to present two stunning local acts.

Prior to the pandemic, Quiet Groove were Calgary DIY scene mainstays, offering up glittering, pointillistic guitar and synth tones beneath the airy surface of frontwoman Ana Villaneuva’s intimate poetic utterances.

Who Cares is the double-threat pandemic brainchild of violinist Laura Reid and flautist Jiajia Li, both professional classical musicians with wide ears and experimental proclivities. Our favourite performances by Who Cares include an 80s workout-gear music video of Philip Glass’s ‘Piece In The Shape Of A Square',’ and a resonant hallway recording of ‘Masque: Incidental II’ by Toru Takemitsu.

Quiet groove

Quiet Groove is a female fronted slowcore/shoegaze project. Formerly known as Paranoid Parents, vocalist Ana Villanueva brings together a collage of shimmering sounds, singing drones, and the occasional haunted CASIO tone. Her backing band features members of Soft Cure, Slut Prophet and Calisthenics.

Who Cares

Jiajia Li and Laura Reid have performed together on numerous occasions in the past several years, from improvised collaborations at Bug Incision experimental music series, jazz series at University of Calgary, to outreach concerts through Health Arts Society. Coming from similar classical backgrounds with a shared passion for exploring the infinite possibilities in music and sound creation and presentation, the 2 friends officially formed a duo project called “Who Cares?” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The aim as a duo has been to provide personal and musical support for each other during the pandemic while searching for new ways to present classical and contemporary music, and to connect with fellow musicians and music lovers through public livestreams and videos. “Who Cares?” self-released the album Vol.1 in 2021 and is available on bandcamp.
