Containr outdoor double bill

matthew cardinal + brick road

July 22nd 7PM

For our first live concert since before the pandemic hit, we’re thrilled to present a lush, outdoor double bill featuring Matthew Cardinal (of Nêhiyawak) and Brick Road (Ethan Bokma of Holy Drone Travellers).  Both hailing from Edmonton, each musician offers unique soundways through ambient, drone, and free improvisation traditions.

Known primarily for his work in moccasingaze trio Nêhiyawak, Matthew Cardinal’s solo synthesizer project is a gift of bright jewel-tones circulating within a bewildering melodic ecosystem.  As we wake from sixteen months in live-performance hibernation, this is a special opportunity to drift gently, traversing emotionally-resonant fragments of a crystalline auditory imagination.

Brick Road is an optimistic new solo offering from clarinettist-composer Ethan Bokma, who cut his teeth as a core member of the cosmic Hindustani free jazz band Holy Drone Travellers.  Locating his sound within a diverse lineage of drone minimalism, his influences simultaneously include such Western composer luminaries as LaMonte Young, 21st Century disentanglings of the free sounds first brought to us by Sun Ra and Mingus, and a new punk era of maximalist improv perhaps most pointedly expressed by the Italian superforce Jooklo Duo.  A treat for our ears to collide with.

Brick Road

Brick Road is a manifestation of one's own being; a documentation of ongoing personal growth and lessons learned from a past of callous elitism to being plunged in the cleansing sonic flood of John Coltrane, Ravi Shankar, and the like. Out of that monolithic undertow emerged Brick Road: A new state of being fixated on both the cosmic and joyous qualities of sound. Brick Road is one of many acolytes of "The Drone" and a creator of music that points towards something far greater than the musician.
